It doesn't suck after all!
I spent a couple of hours at the Starbucks in Chapters today. After scoping out my submissions spreadsheet, I decided to read a Clarion story, "Regenerating Titan."

It doesn't suck. At least, after a few corrections, it now doesn't suck. And with any luck, and a couple more passes, I will have a submission for Writers of the Future.

Woot! I won't be skipping the quarter.

I didn't dig out my Clarion crits. I think it better to not go there. After all, I haven't looked at the story in over three years, so I was certainly reading with a fresh eye.

And last night, I wrote 212 new words. So I'm at Day 1/100 of Club 100. Tonight, another hundred new words before bed. Gotta find my rhythm again.

Woohoo! And it sounds like SF, although I suppose the Titan could be from Greek myth????

This one is definitely SF. Very SF.

I bet you spent as much postage as I did mailing home those Clarion crits...

(mine was something along the lines of $170 Australian)

I'm slowly growing familiar with the "It doesn't suck!" reaction myself.

Whoops, the "it doesn't suck" reaction sounds like a distant cousin to "it didn't catch my interest" and "we don't have room for this one right now, send another."

Zed aka [info]canadiansuzanne, and I sometimes call this the "gwwnts club," good writers with nothing to say.

Actually, when I had the "it doesn't suck!" reaction most recently, it was to an edit that cat sent back to me to confirm for publication in Fantasy. So it's definitely not that bleak.

Hey, whenever a story's about to be published, it generally doesn't suck much at all!

Sorry about the confusion, neo. I cross-pollinated pass slips with personal reaction upon rereading older tales, duh. It's a problem with us stream of consciousness thinkers (otherwise known as the "whacked ones" or the "high whacky-whacks"). So glad to see you got something past cat. I keep trying, but I'm running out of suitable stories. I'm afraid my last try has scraped the bottom of the barrel. Must translate some of my inherent insanity to something worth publishing!

Do you know when it will appear? I've been reading a lot of Fantasy lately and would like to catch your story when it goes online. Identifying features?

They are distant cousins. I was pleased at how much I liked the story. I remembered it differently, and the plot surprised me.

Yes, it cost me plenty to mail them home. And I had made the time to consolidate many crits onto one copy to reduce the cost of postage.

I'm always hapyy when I haven't read a story in a long while (3+ years) and it surprises me all over again.
